John Jeevaratnam has a Toronto-based Studio. His work is grounded in observation, composition, and an enduring interest in people and the stories that surround them.

A graduate of Sheridan College, John completed four years of full-time study before beginning a career that would span illustration, design, and interactive digital media. This multidisciplinary background continues to shape his photography today, bringing a designer’s sensitivity to composition, light, form, and the smallest details within a frame.

Having called Toronto home for more than four decades, John’s perspective has also been shaped by growing up within a distinctly Canadian, multicultural and multilingual environment. It has fostered an appreciation for different people, cultures, traditions, and ways of seeing the world.

His relationship with photography began during his college years back in the 90's, where traditional film photography was part of the curriculum. He later pursued further photographic studies at the Ontario College of Art, now OCAD University, under documentary and portrait photographer Surendra Lawoti.

Travel became another important part of his photographic education. Through extensive journeys around the world, John continued to develop his eye through documentary and travel photography—observing people, places, gestures, light, and the fleeting moments that often say more than carefully constructed ones.

For more than 18 years, he has continued to photograph, allowing experience and patience to gradually shape his approach.

Today, John brings those influences together in his portrait and event work. His photography is thoughtful and unobtrusive, balancing a documentary instinct with an editorial sensibility. Rather than imposing too much on a moment, he looks for what is already there—the expression, gesture, relationship, light, or decisive instant that reveals something genuine.

The result is photography intended not simply to record how something looked, but to preserve something of how it felt.
